Day
1: From
Cairo. Our Mount Sinai Extension begins with a drive (by private
air-conditioned bus) to St. Catherine's in the southern Sinai. You begin
your climb up Mount Sinai by camel (or hike if you choose).
When it becomes too difficult for the camels to climb, you continue on
foot via the "Steps of Repentance." Arrive on the top in time to watch the sunset. It is
very cold from November to March, so dress warmly.
Descend
the mountain in the dusk and sleep at the foot of the mountain at the
lodge which is a part of the St. Catherine's monastery.
Overnight: St Catherine Monastery Lodge.
Upgrade available to a 4 or 5 star hotel in St. Catherine's.
Day
2: The next morning you can go again to the top to greet the
dawn with the hundreds of other pilgrims that make the trek each early
morning, or you can stay in the lodge at the foot of the mountain.
In
the morning visit St. Catherine's
Monastery. There is a possibility that the monastery may not
open that day. The monks are not under any obligation to serve the
tourists that come. However, it is rare for them to close. Visitors are
normally allowed to visit from 8-11 AM each day.
On your return drive to Cairo you can stop to visit a Bedouin village.
Overnight at Novotel Cairo Airport Hotel, 4 star.
Upgrade available to Movenpick Heliopolis, 5 star.
Day
3: Departures. If you are returning to NYC, USA, your
flight departs Cairo at 10:00 AM. Arrival in New York City in the
afternoon (same day), 3:15 PM New York time.
